9iAS_10201 runInstaller fails

I'm trying to install Oracle9i Application Server 1.0.2.0.1 on a Sun E450 running Solaris 8. Oracle 8.1.6 is already installed on this host.

I get to the point of running runInstaller, and it fails with the error

    Class not found: oracle.sysman.oii.oiic.OiicInstaller

Environment variables are set as per
http://technet.oracle.com/docs/products/ias/doc_library/ 102sol_doc_otn/install/toc.htm

I can't find anything in the docs about setting, e.g. CLASSPATH or JAVA_HOME. I tried running runInstaller with a full path and by cding to its directory and running './runInstaller'.

What's wrong? Anyone else get this to work?
