Don't know about the Visio repository, but if the number of objects was large enough to allow some programming time, I'd read from the Visio repository (assuming it's has an API), and write to Designer's repository (which has an open, documented API). Graphic copies don't mean a thing - any diagram in Designer is an representation of what's in the repository, not the other way around. So you cannot build your Designer repository on graphics. Besides, there would without any doubt be differences in meaning for similar shapes between the two product.
