I have a postscript printer driver set up to print to file to create a *.ps file. Then, using a utility called PSTOEDIT I have converted *.ps files containing large ERDs to *.pdf format. Here is an excerpt from the readme file for PSTOEDIT:

"PSTOEDIT

pstoedit converts Postscript(TM) and PDF files to other vector graphic formats so that they can be edited graphically. See pstoedit.htm or index.htm for more details on which formats are supported by pstoedit.

The architecture of pstoedit consists of a PostScript frontend which needs to call a PostScript interpreter like Ghostscript and the individual backends which are plugged into a kind of framework."

It makes a surprisingly small *.pdf file, in color, as I have a color printer driver. The trick to making a large diagram viewable as a *.pdf is to print it onto one page. Usually this is in the print dialog, where you can set it to print one page. When the *.pdf is viewed in the Acrobat reader it can zoom to as big as you need, as it scales beautifully. I find Acrobat's hand tool perfect (better than scroll bars) for moving the diagram around to see all parts.

Setting PSTOEDIT up is not simple--it's a little technical, but the documentation does explain it all. It will make the *.pdf file you want.
