WebDB Form - Checkbox - Boolean value

WebDB offers "CheckBox" as an display/edit option in the form-builder. I want to use it to display/edit a boolean field value. Problem:
What kind of datatype in the column the checkbox is pointing to?

What kind of datatype in the column the checkbox is pointing to?
I've tried number (0/1) and varchar2 (Y/N - YES/NO - ON/OFF) as
datatypes - with no luck.
It turns out that the form writes "on" to the column when the checkbox
is checked, and writes nothing at all (not NULL) when it's not checked.
Any clues?
