AFAIK, svrmgr for motif on Solaris only runs in 256 color mode. Your XF86Config file might only be setup top to run your video card at 16, 24, or 32 bpp. You'll want to find info on resetting the color depth to 8bpp (256 colors) for XFree86 and then try it.
