Using C for Oracle Precompiler "user exits" in Report Builder

A colleague at work needs to use some C programs I wrote which convert dates to and from "epoch time". We have some documentation which seems to suggest we could use EXEC IAF GET and EXEC IAF PUT statements to pass parameters between my C program and the Report Builder environment in Developer 2000, but it's not detailed enough-- we need some examples to make it clear.
