We are trying to obtain information (positive and negative) on developer experiences of  using Oracle tools to access cross platform databases, including heritage databases such IMS and DB2. This is part of an evaluation of Client/Server Tools for BC Hydro.

We’ve defined Cross Platform database support as enablement of the primary application to access or use data on a non-local database server. A non-local database server is a separate secondary DBMS which can be located in the same or a different LAN segment/ platform from the primary application. It may mean:

· Simply downloading data for reporting purposes from another application,
· Issuing updates to records maintained on another database environment,
· Having the other database be an integral part of a transaction definition which would
be covered by transaction locks, two phase commit and rollbacks. · Fully distributed peer-to-peer configurations where the same data types are maintained at multiple locations and physical locations of the data are transparent to the users. · Sending messages across via Message-Oriented Middleware or Object-Request Broker or Remote Procedure Call to trigger some stored procedure/method/operation on the other application/database. The resulting message/data may/may not need to be passed back to the sending application.

If you have experience developing applications that link to heritage databases we would appreciate hearing from you. Please email responses to roger.hanna_at_bchydro.bc.ca or phone:
