Selecting canvas after runtime?

I'm trying to design a menu that will enable the user to select a different canvas for a window. I've tried replace_content_view , with minimal success i.e. the canvas changes for approx. 1 second and then changes back to the original canvas. I realize this is because forms will not allow a change of canvas while there is focus in a window. Any one know of another way to change a canvas at runtime?
