The latter does not happen to DBA's only. In fact I believe that many businesses and companies suffer from this disease. Which actually does nothing to reduce the threat but may make you feel less alone when faced with the situation. :-)

I notice that no one mentions the "self managing database" - and I believe correctly so. Whatever smartness is built into database management systems (and frameworks and application servers and...) there need to be people who understand how they work and how to best adjust them to changing requirements.
