Mark, to my knowledge it is lifted in 10.2. There is a hidden parameter _PGA_MAX_SIZE which regulates how much memory can be consumed by a single process. Of course, there are also some bugs associated with the mechanism. Look at the note 5947623.8. Granted, it's for hash join, not for the sort/merge, but the same thing probably applies to both. They tell me that 10.2.0.5 will be completely bug free.
