I worked in some large projects combining Oracle Spatial and ARC SDE. ARC SDE was used most of the time for drawing, editing atc, while Oracle spatial was used for calculations and control functions within the database. Biggest problem was to get the ARC SDE and Oracle people to work together, and issues about where to put which functionality. As where ARC SDE/ARC Server is actually .net based (though ported to java as well), the application server for Oracle was java based, and it was hard to get people with both SDE and java experience. Getting the .net/java bridge working and performing was a pita.

I may not have all SDE terms right, it's some years ago, if you have specific questions, I'd be glad to be of any service... I spent most of the time debugging/troubleshouting/tuning Oracle Spatial (it shows some strange behaviour on certain platforms, we used VMS at that time but ported the applications to HP/UX during the project). Performing the same operation twice and getting different answers was not unusual... ;-)
