Under Debian Sarge (and possibly earlier versions), this is no longer true. From what I understand, Oracle un-officially supports Debian and provides packages for installation. I have installed Oracle on a test system in this manner and it worked very well. I just had to point my package manager to the un-official source and run a few commandlines. Worked like a champ.
