Yes, they are different. I was answering the question by Noons as to why DB2 DBA's seem to be more concerned about reorgs than Oracle DBA's.

I do agree that Oracle has many nice features, and some features that DB2 does not have. But Oracle does not do clustering of tables like DB2 does it, and I think there are some advantages to the way DB2 does clustering. Likewise, there are features of Oracle that DB2 does not have, and these Oracle features do have advantages.

I would agree that a fair number of Oracle DBA's use IOT's for read-only or mostly read-only tables, but they tend not use them for tables with high insert volumes because of the extra overhead involved. I think that if you measured the percentage of tables that are IOT in Oracle, it is much, much less than the percent of tables in DB2 that have table clustering. That may be true even though 42% of Oracle DBA's have at least one IOT. Received on Fri Nov 25 2005 - 19:00:22 CST
