Works ike a CHARM as long as the file systems are compatible. Since OP is using raw disk, there are a number of conditions that must be watched - endian being the most important.

Best recommendation to handle the entire mess is pretty simple - use RMAN ...

Other than that, it's pretty simple to test this. use dd and see whether the target DB comes up on the other box.
