As you are discovering, not only is it not a dumb question, but in some cases it is difficult to figure out what patches have been applied. Various methods have been used over a narrow range of versions, and some of those have been broken.

You might consider creating a handwritten log for all databases.

You might look at the sh to see what it does.

And if all else fails, enter a tar.
