In case you missed the split-block reference, see the docs: http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96519/backup.htm#1004914

This is probably the biggest difference between RMAN and other utils for online backups, as it makes a huge difference in how much redo is generated during the backup.

Then there are mirror splitting options, but you probably already know how long it takes to resilver your terabytes.
