trending transaction by update,delete,select,insert on a periodic and cummulative

My management is asking for some trending of various transactions by
type(select,insert...) on a periodic basis to determine peaks and valleys in
the daily usage.  They'd also like to get a cumulative look at those same
types.  Any one with ideas as to how to do this?
