As a corollary to "learn to live with it", learn also to always test changes such as this first in a non-production database where the consequences of a mistake are minimal. A script works much better for this than typing commands in by hand or using a GUI tool such as OEM.

Although the poster asked about datafiles, on a related topic it is possible and safe to drop tempfiles from a temporary tablespace. But that is most likely not the situation at hand.
