32 bit sw cannot address more than 2Gb of memory. However, running properly designed databases, should never this amount of SGA.

You may also ask yourself why you are running 32 bit Oracle on a 64 bit O/S, as 64-bit 8.1.7 does exist, and the only thing you need to do is to order the CD by means of iTar.
