You could also try V$VERSION... but I doubt you'll see that fifth level of revision shown.

If you had a specific bug that was supposed to be fixed by the upgrade, test for that. Otherwise, your effort would be better spent on an Oracle 9i or Oracle 10g upgrade... since 8i is de-supported.
