From an administration standpoint, it is probably nice to have just one RMAN Recovery Catalog. Other considerations may affect your decision though. For instance, how are you backing up the Recovery Catalog? If you are using RMAN, then you don't want the same database you are backing up to also hold the Recovery Catalog. So this would necessitate at least two Recovery Catalogs in different instances, on different servers. I've even added a Recovery Catalog to pre-existing instances. Why create a new database just for the Recovery Catalog?
