Is it possible that the names.resolution_method was (HOSTNAME) - whereby DNS would point to the database name with a listener on port 1521?

back in the day of sqlnet 2.3 - this was a faster method to resolve a connect descriptor than using (TNSNAMES).

a trace file (sqlnet.ora - trace_level_client = ADMIN) would tell you what method was used.
