Hi Korilu,

For me, their resume and listed experience is paramount. The interview should be a process of confirming what's on paper is the real deal and whether they appear likely to fit in to your environment.

In the interview room, have a PC running whatever database version you administer. Say to the candidate, I can't start my database, can you fix it. Say you can answer any particular question you may ask. Take note of the questions *they* ask and see if they can perform a database recovery appropriate to a high availability, no data loss environment (or whatever environment you may have)

Once they've recovered the database, say that the database runs like a pissed, one legged constipated old man, how would you approach finding what's wrong. Again take note of the questions *they* ask and what their plan of attack is.

Finally say that this query runs like a retarded wombat after a big feed, can you make it run faster. Again take note of their plan of attack.

Or some of the above or variances of the above. Basically it's taking the opportunity to see how they cope with an Oracle database in front of them and seeing whether they approach these issues in an appropriate manner (not necessarily resolve the issues, there isn't time for that).

If they perform well and like David Bowie, well the chances are good you've got a winner.

Cheers

Richard
