This has changed in 9i. SYS has become a special account, and you always need to use the SYSDBA privilege. This has been posted several times in the newsgroup, and of course it is in the release notes. I still can't understand why so many people here use the newsgroup as their first resort, instead of trying to resolve their own questions. Apparently those people belief members of the newsgroup should read the docs on their behalf.
