Sounds like a fair assessment to me.
I doubt however that any of the major vendors would care to buy up OODBMS companies anymore than they are (not) caring to buy up XML DBMS vendors.

At the end of the day it all has to work in the context of the RDBMS because that's where the data is and most will continue to be.

Interestingly neither Sybase nor Microsoft seem to move at all towards OO.
