Oracle's Installer is not in the same league as Microsoft installers. :-)

Yes. The Installer will "upgrade/re-install" you existing components. As you have 817 installed and installing from an 817 CD, these components will essentially remain untouched - your configuration files like TNSNAMES.ORA should also remain intact.

The better way to install is to select the custom option (which is what I always use). The Installer will detect and check existing components on the product/component tree list. Scroll down and select Pro*C - uncheck any other components that you do not need installed (e.g. Pro*Cobol).

As far as I can recall, existing components will not be re-installed. Or if they are checked for re-installing, you can simply uncheck them - either way, it will not "damage" your existing installation.

That should be it - click okay, then have a beer or go and terrorise those VB coders who think they are real programmers.
