What have they done to Oracle?

Just installed Oracle 8i - what the hell have they done to it? - all the programs now run about
100th the speed of Oracle 7.3.4 .EXE's



Java is a good idea but to severly disable them, reducing productivity to this extent has got to be
madness! or maybe there is very good justification for this - any ideas?
