Questions:
What version. Please *ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS* specify version and platform. How did you create the second instance?
Did you copy the original edit init<sid>.ora and edit the init.ora to reflect the change of controlfile names.

If you only copied the init.ora...
be prepared for a shock:
you have your second instance linked to the first.
