Just my biased 2 cents' worth, but I personally think you'd have to go a long way to beat RMAN backing up to DISK, and then having a simple cron job (or AT, you didn't mention the platform!) transfer the lot off onto tape. Unless you have a rinky-dink tape backup device costing gazillions, strikes me that backing straight off onto tape is liable to leave tablespaces in hotbackup mode for too long for my liking.
Oh, incidentally, RMAN is free. And it works very nicely, provided you can invest three weeks to do battle with the syntax (though 'backup database including controlfile' isn't really going to stretch you too much, I'd have thought).
