Well, I agree that MySQL is not a serious option since it neither has transactions nor even row locking. But if you want an open source database system, PostgreSQL is a very good option for you. In fact it is good in terms of object/relational features, user defined types are supported excellently. The basic relational stuff works fine and its optimizer is pretty good.
