I don't know why they can't co-exist. On one of our Unix boxes, we have Oracle, Sybase, UniCenter, Netscape server, Tuxedo, Essbase...they are just programs. Of course Oracle wouldn't want you to run Sybase _anywhere_, and vice verse:)
