on hp-ux, newfs is used to create a file system on a logical volume. the creation of the file system, in effect, "cooks" the logical volume. i can't see that solaris would be any different.

i can't fathom a reason you would want to create a file system on a partition that oracle will access as a "raw" partition. of course, you need at least one file system to hold the ORACLE_HOME directory, and the arch, bdump, udump, etc. directories.
