Check out your oratab file. You may need to follow the trail from /etc/rc2.d/[oracle_startup_file], which will probably point to dbstart, which will probably point to $ORACLE_BIN/dbstart which probably uses /var/opt/oracle/oratab ... or not. YMMV. jc
