I know that the software costs are now equal (Zero for the OS and the same Oracle power-unit pricing for both Intel and Sparc), but how do the hardware costs compare?

I checked on the Sun site, and it seems that the cheapest server you can get runs US$11K, whereas for you can get fairly well-stocked Intel machine (512Mb with RAID ) for about $5K. In the long run, the differences in hardware cost may prove small, but for companies just getting started, the Intel-based solution might require less upfront cash.
