this may help

on my WinNT 4.0 SP4, i installed Oracle 8.0.x client, and installed both "Net8" and "SQL*Net 2.3.4"

tnsping util "pings" the listener using SQL*Net 2.3.4, which reads tnsnames.ora from c:\orant\network\admin

tnsping80 util "pings" the listener using Net8, which reads tnsnames.ora from c:\orant\net80\admin

plusw80 uses the Net8 connections
