Don't. That is, put as much into read-only tablespaces as possible and backup just the rest. Otherwise, start saving for lots of disk for mirror/mirror-break concepts, or some heavy duty storagetek tape drives.

2. what backup hardware is used / suggested There's plenty out there. Parallel DLT is still up there as a "quick" solution for moving lots of data.

3. What server platform is used / suggested Most probably unix. All the big names will be able to persuade you with how much better there platform is than any other: Sun, HP, Sequent etc.
