There are certain cases though that 1x18 might be better than 18x1 FS's... Some LVM's will stripe the data for you and there may be cacheing issues as well (Veratos is one example). We tested one large file system vs. several smaller ones and, all other things being =, got better performance out of the one large one, allowing the OS Software to stripe for us... Part of the reason was we ended up with a larger cache avalible for read/write on that file system.
