Converting from Oracle7.3.2 to Oracle8.0.4

Hello,

we must upgrade from Oracle 7.3.2 (IBM AIX) to Oracle 8.0.4. The software itself is not the problem, but the data:

Basically we have two possibilities:

1. Do a full database export from 7.3.2, then a full database import on
8.0.4
2. Use a magic conversion utility to directly convert the datafiles.

Question:
Because possibility 1) will for sure last very long, does anybody have experiences with this magic conversion tool? People keep telling that it exists, but nobody so far has actually seen it. The company refuses to *try* that method. It must be sure that it works. Any comments?
