I've never used a staging area myself when installing Oracle (7 or 8) on HP-UX 9.X, 10.20 or 11.0 and I've therefore not had the problems you folks seem to have. A staging area's probably only useful if you want to install the software on multiple client system disks (we don't - we just put the stuff on an NFS disk) or apply regular patches (I would recommend against this unless you actually do have a bug that needs a patch to fix it).

Of course, the "fun" thing to watch out for in HP-UX 11.0 installs is the clear total lack of testing Oracle has done with 8.0.5 and 11.0. Hence, you hit nightmarish problems like:

• PFS bug prevents the orainst program from being run directly from CD-ROM (so you have to copy the entire CD-ROM to a scratch hard disk area and run the installer from there).
• Bugs in at least two of the Oracle 8.0.5 install scripts that, if you diff between 10.20 and 11.0 versions of them, show that syntax errors have been introduced in the 11.0 versions. I copied the 10.20 versions and they worked in 11.0 - the files are: <CD-ROM>/network/install/protocols/protocols.vrf <CD-ROM>/network/install/protocols/protocols.ins It was very lucky that Oracle shipped us both the 10.20 and 11.0 CD-ROMs !
• The failure to ship Legato Storage Manager with any release of Oracle 8 on HP-UX, despite the docs saying it is shipped.
• The Oracle Developer (1.6.1) CD-ROM for 11.0 wrongly specifies .sl versions of libraries, when 11.0 uses .1, .2 etc numbering instead. Hence, I had to change <CDROM>/orainst/unix.stp as follows: LIBC = "/usr/lib/libc.2"; LIBMOTIF_NAME = "libXm.2"; LIBXT_NAME = "libXt.2"; LIBX11_NAME = "libX11.2";
• There are further references on that Developer CD-ROM to libX11.sl, libXm.sl and libXt.sl, none of which exist on an 11.0 system without transition links, so in /usr/lib I created three soft-links: libX11.sl -> libX11.3 libXm.sl -> libXm.4 libXt.sl -> libXt.3

Basically, unless you've installed Oracle before *and* are fairly competent at working around problems, you've got no chance at all of installing Oracle 8.0.5 under HP-UX 11.0. In fact, I reckon our site must be one of the few around with 8.0.5 working perfectly under HP-UX 11.0 :-)
