Good question.

I was not the person to decide this, coming from a mostly UNIX environment I probably would have recommended UNIX. Unfortunately, the client was shown a working version of this product on an NT box running SQL Server. Once the client liked what they saw, the company I contract to was only given a budget to convert the database to Oracle, not the server application to UNIX.

I, in constant quest of knowledge, took on this mission to learn Oracle8 and NT (and add a 3rd platform to my Oracle installs - after all I'm an Oracle DBA, not a System administrator.) And weather I or you like it or not, Managers and the people with the Budgets are choosing NT.

Not many years ago, this was a similar battle between MainFrame heads and the so-called UNIX bigots (back then UNIX boxes couldn't handle the horsepower or diskstorage of MainFrames, they were much less stable; Heck, they're just now coming up with decent clustering solutions.) Hell, if I had it my way, we'd all be running Macintosh Clients off of VMS machines!

In any case, Oracle's Advanced Replication coupled with Full-Time Software's (Formerly Qualix's) failover software and two top of the line Intel-based servers (per logical node) provide enough resistance to downtime.

Hope that covers it,
Frank
