Multiple tnsnames.ora files

We have a problem in that some of our users require access to an unusual instance in addition to the usual set. We do not wish to add the details of the unusual instance to the system tnsnames file for reasons that include security and duration of use.

The manuals imply that user locals files can be used in addition to system level ones but refer readers to the OS-dependent manuals for details. The manuals for Win95/NT do not mention the subject, but we believe it can be done by using multiple Oracle_home values in some way.

Has anyone tried this, if so how does it work and what drawbacks have you experienced.

The alternative is to use a names server and a local file but none of us has any experience with Oracle Names and people are reluctant to use it if alternatives can be found. Received on Fri Sep 18 1998 - 00:00:00 CDT
