redo copy latch

Fellow DBAs--

I have been attempting to correct a very poor .003 hit ratio on my redo copy latch by first incrementing LOG_SIMULTANEOUS_COPIES to 8, and also by setting LOG_ENTRY_PREBUILD_THRESHOLD > 0. COPIES doesn't seem to help, and THRESHOLD doesn't seem to be supported under Oracle 7.3.2 on SUN/Solaris 2.4. In fact, THRESHOLD prevents instance start. Is there a replacement THRESHOLD setting/command, or another method for prebuilding redo?
