Been way too long since I did this, but as I recall, the secret was to run a program that shows what each key is generating so you can make the right x mapping. Just can't quite remember the name of that program. Mighta been showkey http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO.html#s1 (sorry I'm not on linux right now).
