Once again I find myself feeling that odd mixture of gratitude and revulsion that is so peculiar to those who post naive questions on the usenet. Many thanks to all who replied, including the rude ones.

I should have included additional information. This particular laptop on which I installed 9i Personal is a 6-yr-old VAIO running a PII233 w/192mb RAM. The HD is 20Gb but only 10Gb are allotted for Win2K as it is a Win2K/RH9 dual boot. I'm not using it for anything other than practice and learning.

Other posters were right that turning the db service off is simply a matter of using the Services applet, and that if doing so I should turn off the associated services as well. I admit it is a little puzzling that my instructor was not familiar with this. It actually didn't take me that long to figure it out myself last night after I posted my question but before reading most of the responses. I guess I'll be finding out as the semester progresses just what kind of instructor I've stumbled upon. Oh well, I have to learn somehow... Received on Tue Jan 27 2004 - 16:54:05 CST
