Playing about with various things led me to this particular problem

ORA-25153: Temporary Tablespace is Empty

On a sort operation. The root cause for this rather tickled me. As hopefully we know a tablespace is a logical collection of datafiles (or in this case tempfiles). The cause of this error - there are NO tempfiles at all associated with this tablespace.
