LONG column in Reports

Hi all,

I just listened to a voice message left to me by a coworker...he's working with Crystal Reports and is trying to show the first 100 characters of an Oracle LONG column in his report....the helpdesk at Seagate (Crystal) told him to create a view containing the first 100 characters using SUBSTR....however, this returns an error ORA-00932: Inconsistent datatypes

I'm wondering if it's possible to break up a LONG field in this way or if another methodology is required.

Thanks for any help in advance....
PS: I would've searched the archives on this one but they seem to be missing in action :)
