An idiot can install and sort of run 2000 where I cant really say the same for SunOS. Cost of hardware is an issue as well. IIS / MTS / DCOM / COM+ and many other enhancements are things that I can think of. Was DHCP even in the OS 15 years ago? POP3? NNTP? Not arguing which is better today each has its own pros and cons. I totally agree that software has gone to shit. When I went to school we were taught methodologies and knew what Formal Methods are but in real life most of that is out the window. How many developers today actually know how to write a sort routine or understand an entire project on all levels! Its a scary thing but at least it gives me some job security.

Look at where SQL Server 2000 is and look at where Sybase is. Microsoft did a great job with SQL Server 7.0 and is really enhancing it with SQL 2000. Sure Oracle is more tunable and may have more functionality but do you need that. You just said look at where hardware has gone. So many people think of SQL Server and think of 6.5. Not that 6.5 is the worst engine in the world but the difference is night and day between 6.5 and 2000. You could say the same with Oracle 7.3 and 8i. Sybase doent even post TPCC benchmarks anymore nor will Oracle at this rate beacause they cannot compete with MS at the price performance level. I think that IBM is the only one with a chance left because of pricing. Sybase will be gone soon as well as Informix.
