Could it be market penetration?
From what I read in the trade press there may be as many millions of Linux machines out there as there are hundreds of Solaris on Intel machines. Even if the ratio is millions of Linux to thousands of Solaris on Intel it would explain why major vendors are unwilling to invest the time and money needed to develop, test, document, and support their products for Solaris on Intel.
