What to do with a "fuzzy" restore?

Hi all, I have discovered the hard way that my predecessor never tested his recovery procedures. I restored an instance from a physical backup, but unfortunately it was never altered for achivelog mode. Oracle Support, blessed be they, says sorry, find another day's backup that's restorable....

I'm able to rebuild all data files, rollback segments, control files from a five-minute period on a certain day last week. Support has talked me through the effort to reset the control files, without success. When I try to open the instance, it says it's looking for a (non-recoverable) archive file.

Given this is a development instance, I can settle for best effort with the possibility of some lost changes. Is is feasible to pick a control file and overlay the two others? Or is there a better way to force what I have to start?

FWIW, I'm running 7.3.2.3 over HP-UX 10.20. Thank you! --
