Thanks both. It turns out to be a foible of this particular hosting company. I am familiar with users and privileges. My last host allowed me to add other users to a database and set their privileges very easily. This one allows only one user per database initially and then I have to set up 'stand-alone' users (no database attached) and then use SQL statements to grant them access. A bit of a PITA but I can live with it, especially as the hosting is free for a charity. As for uploading this host has other methods so all is now well.
